If you're looking to build the ultimate home gym, you'll definitely want to leave room for at least one punching bag. The good news is that you don't need a ton of space to mount a training bag in your space, and there are many different ways to do so, depending on how your space is set up. Regardless of how you choose to mount and hang your bag in your home gym space, the process isn't all that complicated. Here are a few quick and simple ways to hang a bag in your space.
#1: From a Rafter
If your home gym space is located in the basement, and that basement area has exposed ceilings, a great place to hang your bag is from the exposed cross beams or joists that are present there. You can buy a hanging chain that will allow you to securely mount your bag from most beams. Make sure to check that the joist can support the added weight of the bag and chain. Note: do NOT attempt to hang or mount a bag from the drywall on your ceiling. This is a quick way to tear down the ceiling and have a real mess in your basement. If your basement is fully finished, it is not advisable to hang bags from your ceiling. While it can be possible if you find the joists and drill into them through the drywall, most training bags will still be too heavy for the drywall to support.
#2: Mount Them on the Wall
If you have open wall space, you can mount your training bags on them using a single bag rack or similar product. This will work for both heavy bags and muay thai bags. Just make sure to use the appropriate anchors. Bags can be mounted to concrete walls. If the walls are finished, make sure to locate the studs within them or the drywall will not be able to support the weight of the bag and rack. The only downside of mounting a bag to the wall is that it makes it difficult to circle the bag while training. It also limits which direction the bag can swing.
#3: Use a Standing Bag Rack
If mounting from the ceiling is impossible and you don't have the wall space to spare, your only option left will be to use a freestanding bag rack, which are available for most types of punching bags on the market. This can be a viable option if you have the floor space to spare, and it's also a great option if you want to train on all sides of the bag.
