Your mats take a hit every session. Sweat, bacteria, and accumulated wear are constants in any active training environment. A consistent cleaning protocol protects your athletes and extends the life of every surface in your martial arts facility.
Build Mat Cleaning Into Every Class
Mats are the most used surface in your gym. Sweat and bacteria build up fast. A quick cleaning after every class keeps your athletes safe and your surfaces performing.
Use a mat mop with Enviro Care Gallon Cleaner, a disinfectant cleaner formulated specifically for martial arts training surfaces, for fast, even coverage across your floor. Close each class with a cleanup round with students wiping down mats as part of the cooldown. This simple practice promotes cleanliness and shares the responsibility.
Wipe Down Wall Pads, Bags, and Equipment Daily
ZEBRA Wall Pads, Pole Pads, and Heavy Bags collect sweat and bacteria at the same rate as your mats. A daily wipe with Enviro Care Gallon Cleaner keeps your facility fresher between classes. Assign a staff member to walk around the gym after each training session. A spray-and-wipe pass takes under five minutes and protects your equipment and your athletes.
Keep Cleaning Supplies Accessible
Make cleaning easy. Place spray bottles and disposable towels or wipes at multiple stations around the gym. When supplies are within reach, staff and athletes use them. When they require a trip to the supply closet, they often go unused.
Address High-Touch Surfaces Beyond the Mats
The mat surface gets the most attention, but other contact points carry significant hygiene risk:
· Door handles
· Locker rooms
· Benches and seating areas
· Check-in kiosks and front desks
Alcohol wipes work well for these surfaces, a pass once or twice a day reduces germ transfer and signals to visitors that your facility takes hygiene seriously. Keep alcohol-based products off ZEBRA Mats and ZEBRA Wall Pads. Alcohol dries out vinyl and accelerates wear and tear.
Schedule a Mid-Year Deep Clean
Daily wipe-downs maintain the surface. And a deep clean addresses everything beneath it. Mid-year is the right time to pull mats, scrub the subfloor, and sanitize every surface in your gym. Add it to your maintenance program and it becomes standard practice. Regular deep cleaning matters for all facilities, from martial arts studios to home gyms.
For large or high-traffic facilities, the ZEBRA Gym Scrubber is a commercial-grade floor scrubber built for the demands of busy training spaces.
How to Clean Your ZEBRA Mats
1. Photograph the mat layout before removal if you plan to reinstall in the same configuration.
2. Remove mats and move them to a separate area.
3. Sweep or vacuum the subfloor, then clean, disinfect, and allow it to dry completely.
4. Use the ZEBRA Mat Backpack Vacuum to remove debris from the top, sides, and underside of each mat.
5. Mix 2 ounces of Enviro Care Gallon Cleaner concentrate per gallon of water.
6. Apply the diluted solution with a damp mop, cloth, sponge, or spray bottle.
7. Scrub all vinyl surfaces, including side and bottom edges, with a medium bristle brush.
8. Wipe the non-vinyl underside with a damp cloth. The underside absorbs water and can sustain water damage if saturated.
9. Allow the solution to air-dry on the surface for at least 10 minutes to kill or inactivate viruses. Rinsing is unnecessary.
10. Allow mats to dry completely before reinstalling.
Use the Right Cleaners for Foam and Vinyl
Selecting the right products is key. Soap-based floor cleaners and bleach break down foam and weaken adhesives, shortening mat life, and accelerating surface damage. Water penetrating behind or beneath the vinyl, or saturation of the mat surface, creates conditions for mold and mildew. This applies across ZEBRA's full surface range, including tatami style mats, smooth mats, and yoga/fitness tiles.
For smooth ZEBRA Mat surfaces, the ZEBRA Mat Mop with its micro-fiber scrubber pad lifts dirt without scuffing the vinyl. Vinyl tape residue removes easily with a small amount of Goo Gone.
Cleanliness Is Part of How Your Gym Operates
The fastest way to maintain a clean facility is to distribute ownership of it. When cleaning becomes part of your standard protocol, your whole training environment performs better. Mid-year is the right time to reset that standard.
ZEBRA has outfitted martial arts studios, wrestling facilities, law enforcement training rooms, and home gyms for over 25 years. Our mats, wall pads, and facility equipment are engineered to last. Cleaning them correctly is part of making that happen.
