Check Your Subfloor
What's underneath your mats? While we recommend that our martial arts mats be installed on wood or concrete subfloors, some people (particularly those setting up home gyms) have no choice but to install them over carpet. While this can be done, you need to take extra steps to ensure that your mats won't slide around while training. If you have your mats installed over a carpeted area, make sure that you have placed a layer of plastic over the carpet. This will help create some friction that can keep the mats in place.
Use an Underlayment
A mat underlayment will not only help keep your mats steady, they also provide a few extra added benefits:
- Softer training surface
- Sound and vibration management
- Preventing mats from bottoming out
Use a Framing Kit
Using a mat framing kit can also help keep your mats in place and firmly together while training. These kits act as a little box to contain your mats. They also make them more visually appealing no matter what your space looks like.
Buy Better Mats!
Low quality mats do not have the underside necessary to keep mats from sliding around no matter what type of subfloor they are placed on. All ZEBRA Mats come with an anti-skid bottom that is made from rubber. This natural surface effortlessly provides added stability to your mats and helps prevent them from sliding around while training. When installed properly, our mats will stay in place, plain and simple!
